So one night I am at home bored. Nothing on TV, no work to do, the wife was out with some friends, so I start browsing trailers for upcoming horror films. Somehow I came across a trailer that blew me away... The Houses October Built. This is a film directed by Bobby Roe; that is another one of the "handheld camera" films. I have said many times that I am growing tired of this style, but I loved this plot so much, I did not care.
I think the main reason I wanted to see this film so badly is because it relates to me in a huge way. Ever since I was a little kid, I have loved visiting the haunted houses around Halloween time. However, the older I got, the more bored I became. At a youthful 37 years old, I still go to these haunted houses, but I am never scared. Yea, I may jump here and there, but SCARED....never. This movie is about a group that goes on a road trip to find the scariest haunts all over the United States. Sounds like fun, and I am tempted someday to do this myself.
Well, along the way, you get some good haunts and some good moments in the film. Of course at times it may get slow, but it does not bother me because it helps keep the film’s "realistic vibe" going. Like always, I will not give away too much of the ending, but let me say that they save the best haunt for the end...or is it a haunt? The ending leaves you thinking one way, but then again, you start questioning a few aspects of it. I will not ask these questions here, but I will say this... WATCH THE FILM!!! It may not go on your all-time greatest list, but I promise you without a doubt it is well worth a watch.
I give The Houses October Built 7 cleavers out of 10!!!
Peace and Have a Happy and Horror Filled Holiday!!!
