So I have sat here for about three minutes just staring at my screen and keyboard trying to figure out how to kick off this review. No, I am not saying the movie I just watched was bad, because it wasn't…it was just a bit different. Anyhow, f--k it....let's just dive in!
This week, I got the chance to check out Steve Wolsh's film Muck. This is the story of a group of friends that barely escape an ancient burial ground, but now they have to decide which route to take in which the wrong choice could lead to their demise.
I try not to look at reviews or ratings for a film until after I give it a watch myself, that way I do not go in with any expectations, but for Muck I happened to take a look at the IMDB rating this morning before I watched it. IMDB ratings gave this film a 2.7 out of 10. I said to myself "Oh damn....here we go." Well, let me assure you, the rating I am about to give this film is much higher than a 2.7...so keep reading.
Let me start off by saying if you like blood, boobs, and death, then you will want to give Muck a chance. With that said, the acting was okay at best. I have seen better, but I have seen much, much worse, so it was not bad enough for me to want to stop watching. Even though I realize a slasher film isn't supposed to make total sense or follow basic logic, I do like a somewhat realistic response to a situation. I will not give any plot details but there were a few times I caught myself thinking "Who in the hell would do that....after THAT just happened?!?!" If you watch the film it will make sense to you. So, average at best acting, a story that did not make much logical sense, and now onto my final issue. In my opinion, and I am serious when I say “in my opinion”, the movie was too dark. I found myself in many scenes thinking that I needed a little more light to fully see what was going on. The only other film I had this issue with was The Expendables....way too dark. However, maybe my 37 year old eyes aren’t fully up to par even though I have 20/20 vision....but anyway. Those are my only complaints.
I will close this review however on a positive note. Was Muck a great film? No, but trust me when I say that I have sat through much worse, MUCH worse. I will again say, if you like hot chicks, boobs, blood, and death then give this film a try. The 2.7 rating on IMDB was far too harsh, especially with some ratings I have seen other films get that sucked much, much, much worse than Muck.
I think Muck is as average a film as you can get. I give Muck a solid and straight up 5 of 10 cleavers. I probably will not see myself watching it again, but I will not make fun of you if you do. Here is my advice: Invite some friends over, drink lots of beer, and just sit back and enjoy Muck for what it is....a fun ride.
